Restringing
Piano strings generally last anywhere
between 50 and 100 years. The life of a set of bass strings varies,
but as a rule the longer the length, the longer the life.
Old wire becomes brittle, tarnished or corroded and can break
more easily. Wrestpins lose essential “grab” in the
plank, the tuning characteristics become spongy and sometimes
the wrestpins will simply not hold.
Normally procedure dictates the replacement of these pins using
a new set of a larger diameter. Care has to be taken not to exacerbate
the problem or split a weak plank. Sometimes wrestplank replacement
is unavoidable.
Only the finest quality 5 ply quartered Canadian Rock Maple replacement
planks are deployed. These are manufactured by Bolduc.
